Ghost Receipts

The paycheck arrives with other people's names already written on it.

Rent takes its share. The subscriptions collect theirs. At the supermarket, you put something back and pretend you were reconsidering dinner. Your phone reminds you that a service you barely remember joining has renewed successfully.

At work, there is a meeting about wellbeing. You attend it during the time you meant to take for lunch.

Static Rage knows how this conversation goes. Someone starts complaining, someone makes a joke, and suddenly everyone has a story. The call that kept transferring them. The vacation days they earned and never dared to use. The raise that looked promising until they did the arithmetic.

One of them laughs too loudly. Another insists he is doing fine. A third has stopped finding it funny. The quiet one remembers exactly what everyone said before they changed the subject.

By the end of the night, the complaints have found a beat. People who arrived with separate problems are shouting the same chorus.

The charges do not stop. Even the final exit seems to require a survey.

Somewhere, there should be a receipt for all this: the hours, the deferred plans, the things paid for that never became yours.

Present Reality

The songs in this world live where you do. They breathe the same air, hear the same news, and carry the same pressures, hopes, and ambitions that follow you through an ordinary day.

About this song

What happens when survival becomes a monthly payment?

"Rent Is Due" is a dark, sarcastic portrait of modern working life โ€” rising rents, stagnant wages, endless bills, shared apartments, and the feeling that every part of life has been turned into a transaction. Built on hard boom-bap drums, bitter storytelling, and a crowd-chant chorus, the track follows ordinary people trying to stay afloat in an economy that never stops collecting.

Part social commentary, part black comedy, part working-class anthem, the song captures the strange reality of working harder than ever while feeling further away from stability.

Some people chase the dream.

Others are just trying to keep the lights on.

Four voices, four ways of handling the same pressure: swagger, laughter, resolve, and the thought nobody wanted to say aloud. Static Rage turns their friction into hip-hop with a sharp tongue and a bruised human center

Lyrics

[Intro]
You ever notice how they sold you the American Dream
but charged you a subscription fee you can't afford to keep?

[Verse 1]
Wake up at five, the alarm don't ask permission,
grind sixty hours, that's not a job, that's a religion,
the landlord raised it again โ€” called it inflation,
the boss called it opportunity, I call it predation,
studio apartment, splitting walls with a stranger,
posted "looking for roommate" like a financial hostage ranger,
government takes the first slice before you even see the plate,
insurance? yeah, that's cute โ€” I'll negotiate with fate,

cough through Monday, work through Tuesday with a fever,
can't afford the clinic so I Google "home reliever,"
the hospital bill arrives six months after the visit,
I threw it in the trash โ€” that's my financial pivot,
ate generic cereal for dinner three times running,
found a coupon in a Facebook group, thought that was stunning,
the charity line was long but hey the line moves fast,
in the greatest country in the world โ€” I'll try to make it last,

[Chorus]
They sold the country, kept the deed,
we work the land, they plant the seed,
rent is due and the tank is dry,
we're the engine, they're the guys who fly,
rent is due โ€” (rent is due)
rent is due โ€” (can't pay it)
built the whole damn thing with our hands,
now we beg for access to our own promised lands

[Verse 2]
She's looking for a boyfriend not for love but for the lease,
split the groceries down the middle, that's the modern masterpiece,
they turned connection into logistics, romance into math,
you need a co-signer for your feelings on this path,

buy the cheap brand, skip the brand name, check the date,
expired coupon, long line, still grateful โ€” isn't that great?
no dental in the plan, so you smile with your mouth closed,
no mental health coverage but hey, at least you've got nice clothes โ€” you don't,

the city charges entry now, the culture costs a fee,
the park has parking meters, even breathing isn't free,
they packaged up the sunsets, sold them back as content,
influencers sold the lifestyle, banks collected the rent,

you're the product, you're the market, you're the consumer and the sold,
you clock in, you clock out, and then you're dead โ€” that's the model,
they give you forty years of grind and a plaque on the wall,
then they hire someone cheaper in the spring โ€” that's the call,

[Bridge]
Let me paint the picture slow so it lands right โ€”
thirty-two, two jobs, no savings, splitting rent with someone you met online,
you make too much for aid, too little for life,
the system isn't broken, it's working exactly as designed,
you're not falling through the cracks โ€” you are the cracks,
you're the margin in their spreadsheet,
you're the rounding error they redact

[Chorus]
They sold the country, kept the deed,
we work the land, they plant the seed,
rent is due and the tank is dry,
we're the engine, they're the guys who fly,
rent is due โ€” (rent is due)
rent is due โ€” (can't pay it)
built the whole damn thing with our hands,
now we beg for access to our own promised lands

[Outro]
Land of the free โ€” (free with purchase)
home of the brave โ€” (brave enough to starve)
liberty and justice โ€” (processing fee applies)
for all โ€” (terms and conditions may vary)
