The Cost of Breathing

🔥 Epic 🌧️ Inner Echoes

A body needs care; a wallet cannot bear it. Static Rage sets the fear of medical debt against weary humor and a chorus that makes every breath sound billable.

Ghost Receipts

The paycheck arrives with other people's names already written on it.

Rent takes its share. The subscriptions collect theirs. At the supermarket, you put something back and pretend you were reconsidering dinner. Your phone reminds you that a service you barely remember joining has renewed successfully.

At work, there is a meeting about wellbeing. You attend it during the time you meant to take for lunch.

Static Rage knows how this conversation goes. Someone starts complaining, someone makes a joke, and suddenly everyone has a story. The call that kept transferring them. The vacation days they earned and never dared to use. The raise that looked promising until they did the arithmetic.

One of them laughs too loudly. Another insists he is doing fine. A third has stopped finding it funny. The quiet one remembers exactly what everyone said before they changed the subject.

By the end of the night, the complaints have found a beat. People who arrived with separate problems are shouting the same chorus.

The charges do not stop. Even the final exit seems to require a survey.

Somewhere, there should be a receipt for all this: the hours, the deferred plans, the things paid for that never became yours.

The songs in this world live where you do. They breathe the same air, hear the same news, and carry the same pressures, hopes, and ambitions that follow you through an ordinary day.

About this song

What happens when staying alive becomes a subscription service?

"The Cost of Breathing" is a darkly humorous protest rap about debt, healthcare, work, and the invisible price tags attached to everyday survival. Built on haunting piano loops, dusty boom-bap drums, and a weary crowd-chant chorus, the track follows ordinary people trapped between medical bills, insurance paperwork, and the simple desire to keep breathing.

Balancing satire, frustration, and uncomfortable truths, the song turns hospital invoices, hold music, deductibles, and credit scores into a modern survival story.

Some people dream of getting rich.

Others are just trying to afford tomorrow.

Four voices, four ways of handling the same pressure: swagger, laughter, resolve, and the thought nobody wanted to say aloud. Static Rage turns their friction into hip-hop with a sharp tongue and a bruised human center

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Woke up with a pain in my chest and a choice to make
Do I call the ambulance or just lie here for heaven's sake?
Three thousand for the ride alone before they touch my skin
That's half my monthly rent—I'll just pop aspirin
(And hope it fades!)
Got a letter from the hospital with numbers in bold red
"Amount due upon receipt"—I laughed until I bled
(Already in the red!)
They say "Health is wealth" but I'm wealthy in reverse
Every breath I take subtracts from my depleted purse

[Pre-Chorus]
The air is free but breathin's got a service fee attached
(Can't pay the bill!)
My lungs work fine but my wallet's gettin' snatched
(It makes me ill!)

[Chorus]
ALL TOGETHER NOW:
THE COST OF BREATHING! (In! Out!)
MY CREDIT'S LEAVING! (Doubt! Doubt!)
I work until my back gives out then pay to fix the spine!
They charge me just to exist—it should be criminal, a crime!
DEDUCTIBLE'S TOO HIGH! (High! High!)
JUST LET ME LIVE OR DIE! (Why? Why?)
Insurance is a joke I pay to hear and never claim!
The cost of breathin's risin'—who's assignin' all the blame?

[Verse 2]
I Googled all my symptoms on the clock at work last week
WebMD said "Cancer" so I laughed until I shrieked
(What else is new?)
Can't afford the specialist, can't afford the scan
Just gotta hope the lump I found is part of some benign plan
(Pray it through!)
My coworker broke her ankle on the warehouse floor last May
She's still payin' off the surgery—she works through pain all day
(Limpin' on!)
We're not employees anymore, we're pre-existing conditions
Waitin' for the bankruptcy to finish its missions

[Pre-Chorus]
I pay three hundred monthly for a plan that covers nothin'
(That's the scam!)
Deductible's so high I'd have to sell my only lovin'
(Goodbye, ma'am!)

[Chorus]
ALL TOGETHER NOW:
THE COST OF BREATHING! (In! Out!)
MY CREDIT'S LEAVING! (Doubt! Doubt!)
I work until my back gives out then pay to fix the spine!
They charge me just to exist—it should be criminal, a crime!
DEDUCTIBLE'S TOO HIGH! (High! High!)
JUST LET ME LIVE OR DIE! (Why? Why?)
Insurance is a joke I pay to hear and never claim!
The cost of breathin's risin'—who's assignin' all the blame?

[Bridge]
(You're not dying. You're just "under-treated.")
(You're not in pain. You're "pre-recovery.")
(I'll be dead in forty.)

[Verse 3]
The GoFundMe is the new health plan for the workin' class
Post your tearful selfie, beg the strangers for some cash
To fix the tooth that's rotted, to remove the cyst that's grown
While CEOs in boardrooms count the premiums they own
I've seen a mother sell her car to pay her daughter's chemo
While the pharma exec buys a third vacation home in Rio
(That's the system, baby!)
We ration insulin like it's gold from ancient kings
And call it "freedom" while we clip our own clipped wings
The air is gettin' thicker with the debt we can't exhale
Every breath's a transaction—every wheeze a bill in mail
I'll work until I drop, then they'll charge me for the fall
The cost of breathin's infinite—they'll collect it all
